Brodhead City snow removal ordinance:

Brodhead City Ordinance 398-10 requires property owners and / or tenants to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk on their property within twenty four (24) hours after an ice or snow fall. Failure to do so will result in the City billing you for clearing your sidewalk.

Who is responsible?

Property owners and tenants are responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks which border their property, including pedestrian ramps.

What is their responsibility?

To clear the length and width of the sidewalk of any and all snow and ice. This includes pedestrian ramps. Remember it's ILLEGAL to plow or place snow on City streets, alleys or parking lots or to place on someone else's property without permission.

When should it be done?

The City Ordinance allows for 24 hours after a snow or ice event to clear the sidewalk. If you are unavailable to clear your sidewalk, the City encourages you to make arrangements to have the work done.

Where can I go with questions?

If you have questions about the Ordinance, please call the Police Department at 608-897-2112.

Why does the City have this Ordinance?

The City of Brodhead hopes to keep its sidewalks safe and clear during the winter months for pedestrian traffic. School children, those out enjoying a walk, and patrons to area businesses often rely on the sidewalks for mobility.

Are there consequences if I don't shovel?

The City of Brodhead hopes that residents and businesses will be able to keep their homes or businesses sidewalks clean and clear. However, if this duty is neglected, the snow and ice will be removed at the property owner's expense. This cost may be billed and / or assessed against the property.
